Flash Fiction #26

It All Comes Out In The End

Rob honey?!  Come have a look at this.  We saved hard enough for this Hollywood trip; you should come and enjoy it.  Just look at the people – and the palm trees – and the….  ROB!!?….  What was that?

What was the name of that stuff we saw advertised back in Illinois, that’s supposed to prevent ‘travellers’ diarrhea’?  Duckitall??  Dukerol!!  I thought that was just if you went to, like, Thailand.  I didn’t know about a bad fish taco in Redlands.

You go ahead with that walking tour of the homes of the stars.  My tour’s going to be sitting.

Go to Rochelle’s Addicted to Purple site and use her Wednesday photo as a prompt to write a complete 100 word story.

Who ever thought a fish taco would be a good idea? Foolish Rob, no sympathy from me.
    😉

I laughed at this one – had a similar (thankfully brief) experience – actually in Thailand though.

Another holiday ruined by the scourge that is the fish taco.

With no interest in them, I’d never even seen one, although they’re now available locally. The wife, who loves a bit of fish for lunch, had me buy a couple of boxes of small, breaded fish chunks – ‘Suitable For Fish Tacos.’ Ahhh, so that’s how they’re made. Still not interested! Let Montezuma eat them. 😀

I’ve never heard of them. Then, I’ve never seen a taco either (we don’t get much foreign cuisine down the far south west of England unless it’s Chinese or Indian takeaway!).

  5. I was going to comment that it’s good your title didn’t saying “comes out OF the end”, but then I read the story and realized it did. Too funny. Good job.

It must be tourist season. The past week, my TV has been covered by these Dukerol ads. This cautionary tale is only funny when it happens to someone else. See poor dmmacilroy, below. 😦

    Dear Archon,

I was supposed to see the Taj Mahal in Agra but spent three days no farther than eight feet from my toilet in a hotel room in Delhi. I can relate to your tale so well. A moving story.

  7. Archon, I’m familiar with what happened to poor Rob. You learn–sometimes the hard way–not to buy and eat food from street venders here in India. I got something worse than diarrhea. I got dysentary. If you’re staying in a good hotel, eat there or ask them to suggest a good place. Humorous and well written. 🙂 — Susan

These are both problems somewhat more likely to occur in India than even at an unlicensed taco truck in Los Angeles. I can’t foresee visiting either, but it’s good advice to keep in mind.

I thought our ancestors were all a bunch of sots, for the amount of (weak) beer they imbibed, but it was much safer to drink than any of the water. 😯

    Shit happens. Even in Redlands.

    Solution: Don’t go to California.

Nothing left out there to draw me any more, even if we could afford to go. Civilization is coming to Southern Ontario. Carl’s Jr. opened 3 miles away. 5 Guys Burgers is a half-hour drive, and In-N-Out is testing the waters in Toronto. Still, a Lotto win might have me looking at the Clock Auditorium. Have a good season, whatever you call it. 😀

Yeah, and all that excitement in Hollywood. I’m sure it causes intestinal discomfort. I laughed because my mom lives in Redlands. Ha! Great take.

My blog-hero and mentor started in Redlands. I think it’s a bit far inland for a gypsy taco truck. What do you (and/or your mother) say? 😕

Oh, you must share now who this person is who is your blog-hero. I’m from that general area, growing up. Now, I’m in Northern California. No, I don’t think it’s too far inland. Every community east of LA is a “bedroom community” of LA. You know what I’m saying? People drive A LOT! It’s a perfect place for a gypsy taco truck!

  11. Not the best way to spend a holiday, is it? Loved the narrative voice in this one 🙂

It’s not the best way, but it must happen a lot, or companies like Dukoral couldn’t afford to spend millions advertising.
I looked back through all my Flash Fictions, and realized that a large percentage are written like this. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, but, what did I mean by that?? Ah well, as long as people appreciate it. 🙂
