Scottish Flag

In the name of Robert the Bruce, and for Scotland the Brae, I claim this territory….wait, what?  There are already people blogging here?!

Three years ago today, on November 21, 2011 – 1096 days – (I get an extra day, because 2012 was a leap year) I published my first post.  It wasn’t even as interesting as this one, and that’s saying as little as I can.

The blogosphere has become a miniature allegory for the larger social life that I left when I retired.  People come, people go, most are nice, a few are assholes, many are creative, some are inspiring, all are interesting, in many ways.

I’d like to say that I’m still taking baby steps, but in my case, they’re doddering, arthritic, old-man steps.  I’ve learned how to insert pictures, as a visual accent to my sometimes ponderous prose.  BrainRants turned me on to the 100-word Flash Fiction genre, and I’m learning how to be more concise.

While I post because I feel I have something to say, however inane or inconsequential, I do so for the feeling of connectedness.  I wish to continue, both for the connections, and the fact that, at my age, inertia keeps me doing whatever works.  It gives me something to do to help fill the many empty retirement hours, with something at least vaguely stimulating and productive.  I like to think that he was happy doing so, but my father spent his last ten years trapped in his house, staring at television.

My stat numbers are not important in themselves, but rather, they are an indication of how successful I am at communication, and my education and entertainment of my readers.

Still solidly in the middle in all categories, this is the end of my third year, where there are newbies every week, and old-timers who have been at this for ten years or more.  I’ve had over 500 followers, 16,000 views, and 5,100 comments, although I’ve realized that I can increase that last number simply by replying to every incoming submission, if only with just a smiley face.

I’ve gone from ‘worrying’, to merely wondering, where I’ll get the inspirations to continue, but, just like a hundred posts ago, I have enough drafts ‘in the can’ to reach 400 posts – something which will occur around Christmas – and beyond, and ideas slowly bubble to the surface, like methane at the La Brea Tar Pits.  I’m pretty sure I can do at least half a personal millennium.  Look out 500!  Here I come.

While I’ve been successful at egotistically making this sound like it’s all about “ME”, it isn’t.  It’s really all about you.  Whether you’re a first-time reader, or one who’s been here hundreds of time, you’ve made it a pleasurable three years, and I look forward to seeing you for lots more.   😆

  3. Congratulations. I love the blogsphere, I don’t worry about stats, I worry more about keeping my mind active since I can no longer work. I enjoy the interaction with others, have made friends with some, and met them in person. The computer world is wonderful for those of us who can’t always get out, it’s my window to the world, sometimes good, sometimes not so good, but overall, my mind has yet to turn to mush.

Yeah, you got it! That’s why I wound up (and stay) here. To keep my brain from going to mush – although I might have waited a bit too long to get started.

You’ve physically met more than one fellow blogger, as I did in the Fellowship saga?? Have you posted the stories?? If not, you should! Congratulations! 😀

  4. Based on your statistics, I guess I’m right on track seeing as I’ve been blogging one-third as long as you, and my stats at this stage are approximately one-third (maybe a little more) of your total for the three years. Makes me feel better.

One area where you’re way ahead of me, and I don’t know how or why, is in Spam. If I access Dashboard from one direction, it tells me that Akismet has protected me from 8559 spam. If I go in from the other side, it says 9009 total spam , and 4862 total ham, which I don’t bother to understand, for a grand total of 13871. Either way, your site says you’ve had over 25,000 spam – two to three times what I’ve had.

BTW, did you know that you’ve been Freshly Pressed – several times!! – including the three posts where you linked to my Ohio/lollipop story??! My daughter has, a couple of times, and was surprised when I told her, because they don’t even send an automated announcement.

The lady who hosts the Flash Fiction got one, as did several of her regular contributors. A lady blog-friend from St. Johns NFLD got one. A male regular reader from the other side of The Rock picked up 8 or 10, including a couple of Flash Fictions. And here I sit, happy for all of them, and not really giving a damn, yet somehow disappointed that the lightning struck so close, so often, yet didn’t hit me. 😦

      • Well, how do you know you weren’t Freshly Pressed if no one’s receiving notification? I never heard anything (and to be honest, I’m reluctant to believe it). I check Freshly Pressed fairly often, and never saw one of my posts on there. How did you find out? After reading your comment, I’ve tried searching Freshly Pressed and still don’t find my posts there. It would make me so happy today if I could even find one!

If I was, in fact, Freshly Pressed, that alone would explain the spike in the Askimet stats. Plus, the fact that I do the Spam-Bam series, which seems to have become sort of a spammer contest – you know, like opening the door to the devil.

I only wish that my regular starts were anywhere near my Askimet stats!

      • Here’s the response I got from WordPress Support about the issue:

“We do still send e-mail notifications to Freshly Pressed bloggers, as well as adding the option to add a “Freshly Pressed” widget to your sidebar once your post has been featured. You would also most likely notice a big jump in visitors to your site. So those things didn’t happen, I’m afraid the other blogger was most likely teasing.”

Possibly, you were looking at “Freshly Pressed” in tags? I know I have that tag line on some of my posts, and it could be confusing.

It made me happy for a day or so, anyway.

1096 days? I can’t believe you took the time to do the math. BrainRants is a bad influence on you. 😉

In 1096 days you’ve become a fixture in our little corner of blog world and I thank you for all the good reads. Keep ’em coming.

My sincere apologies and assurances that I had not forgotten, nor was I ignoring you. I am pleasantly amazed and happy that you have enough time and energy to get back out among the Interwebz.

That you would spend any part of it reading my mundane maunderings and commenting so nicely, derailed my train of thought up around Lac Megantic. Only now are the mental flames dying. Thank you so much. I’m going to take this little head-pat, and put it with my teddy bear hunting rifle. 😆
