Flash Fiction #82

Sandbox

SANDBOX

We put the gate up because people steal sand. We came home one day, to truck tracks across the lawn, and a hole in our beach.

The Sahara has lots of sand, but it’s the wrong kind, and it’s too far to ship. Sand to make glass needs lots of silica.  Saudi Arabia imports it.

The sand people steal is to make concrete for construction. We even had a small ship in our cove with a suction hose.  What used to be a shallow bottom is now deep and stony.  We called the Coast Guard, but they didn’t catch them.

While theft of sand may seem strange, it’s actually quite common, especially along California’s coast, and on the Hawaiian Islands. The pressure of providing for more and more development is fierce.  Dump-trucks with a bulldozer in tow remove tons of sand from popular beaches.  Sucker ships destroy the bottoms of small bays.  Subsequent erosion threatens the concrete supports of decks of beachfront homes.  Play in the sandbox is getting rough.

I had no idea this was even a thing. I’d suggest a shotgun.

Why thanx! I’ve finally been called something I can repeat in polite company. The 100 word limit keeps it terse – although I added an epilogue to this one. Read some of my other posts if you dare, 800/1000 words. 😀

  5. Very interesting. I had no idea either and I live in California. The Costal Commission has a new battle on its hands related to development! It is no good if The Coast is removed by sand thieves.

I’m baffled. Some people think everything in this world is theirs for the taking. Interesting story, great take.

I know! So many people just don’t seem to understand fair play, or share and share alike. It’s why we have so much trouble ridding schools of bullying, or stopping smokers from polluting our air. Giant EGO says, It’s all about ME! 😯

  8. There is what’s called a “Sand Mafia” here in India. They’re going to ruin Goa’s beaches. I didn’t know what a worldwide problem it was or that it happened in California. It’s sad, another rape of the Earth, and someone may be getting paid off. It’s best for the ordinary citizen to stay out of it or they could wind up prematurely deceased. It’s a nasty business. Good story, Archon. —- Suzanne
