ON THE ROAD AGAIN

“What is that thing back there?”

“Hmmm, it looks like a 1908 Marmon automobile.”

“What’s it doing out on the Pacific Coast Highway?”

“Probably going to the Pebble Beach Automotive Concours. That’s a car show and contest for rich guys who restore and maintain classic cars.  Millions of dollars rolling around on narrow tires.  I can barely afford to drive past.”

“Boy, they must have really built them well in the old days. It looks a little breezy without a windshield, but, we’re doing seventy, and he looks like he’s trying to pass.  Slow down, I want a good look!”

Fast cars and rich guys, a recipe for trouble say I. Breezy indeed.

Makers eventually learned to install windscreens. Until then, drivers (and passengers) wore goggles. A Canadian author grew up with a dog and a family car with a rumble seat. He was smart enough to keep his head in at speed, but his father bought and installed goggles on the dog, who insisted on peering around the corner. I’m an ex-motorcyclist. I know what a June Bug in the face can do. 😯

325$ for a ticket to walk around and look at old cars. Sigh. Good story, very interesting.

  4. Breezy is probably just the first thing. I can see that windblown warped face.

Early automobiles were not for the faint of heart – or body….leather coats and helmets, goggles, driving gloves, mufflers(scarves). Phaeton style for the rich enclosed and protected the owners, but left the poor chauffeur open to the elements. At least they’d learned about windscreens. 😳

Great story. Antique car collecting is truly a hobby for the rich….or the soon to be broke. A buddy of mine just scored a great deal on a ’51 Chevy…the thing is far from original, with a Camaro front end and engine. He got it at a steal…$17,000, and has since sunk another $10,000 into it…and he’s not finished….although it looks as if his bank account might soon be

Must have had the engine revamped for it to be hurtling down the highway! I remember driving along the road one day through a procession of vintage cars headed for a show. I was so nervous about accidentally dinging one even though I am a safe driver, because I could feel the money.

Therein lies the lies fiction in this Flash Fiction. It was fun to imagine this open-cockpit brick of a car, doing 70 on the Freeway.
Maintaining a classic car is expensive. If all goes well, here’s a photo of one from our local Cruise Night. * <- Screwed up again. Click here.

Late arrival – I blame my cube existence and stupid people. Love the story – this guy might wreck his classic treasure by going too fast… much like someone I know in a 1968 Mustang, long ago… hmm.

It’s always good to see your happy, smiling face, whenever you get a chance to stop in. 😉 You’re transitioning from Military Administrivial Insanity, to the civilian version. Same shit: different pile.
I remember the story of the Mustang and the drunken palm tree. Damned thing wandered right out into the road. 😯

  8. There are a lot of classic car aficionados. My neighbor happens to be one. He resores them to a jaw dropping beauty. He sews the leather seats on an old fashioned machine. He does the inside and outside. One could use the shine for viewing how we look. Yes, he does exhibit them too. 🚘
There’s a hobby for everyone if we look hard enough. I liked your story.

p.s. I was singing ‘ON THE ROAD AGAIN’ song – due to the title. : )

“Unless you are nude, please do not lean against this car. Buttons and zippers scratch!”
Even that’s no longer valid with navel rings, studs, and chandeliers. 😯
I’ve always liked rock/pop music. A lot of my titles reference songs. Sing away. 😀
