CREATIVE CLUTTER
A clean desk is the sign of a diseased mind.
Once, he had been embarrassed by his messy work area. Accountants are neat and orderly. Writers are artists, whose minds must be free to soar. Their thoughts, words, ideas and concepts eddy and flow to produce prose which will reach out and grab the reader.
Neatness was over-rated. Cleaning was non-productive. Filing was prosaic. His system was chronological – newest stuff on top of the pile. Besides, his Mom was coming over to visit and bring him supper Friday evening. She’d have his little nook Spic and Span before she left.

Like Keith said, he won’t be able to find anything once Mom has gone through it! My husband used to do that… drove me nuts. I could find nothing after he “cleaned up”. You would love the satirical book “The Joy of Leaving Your Sh*t All Over the Place” by Jennifer McCartney (who just so happens to be a fellow Canadian) – a total mockery of the book “The LIfe-Changing Magic of Tidying Up” by Marie Kondo. Though, I have to admit I saw myself in a few of the scenarios “suggested” by McCartney!

I drive the wife nuts, putting away stuff that she hasn’t used yet – just because, at our house, the saying is, “A place for everything, and everything….wherever you drop it.
Must have a look for Jennifer’s book. Canadians can write – satire??! Who knew? Hopefully, Chapters/Indigo! 😀

I had an office manager like that. His desk was 3 inches deep in assorted paper….but he remembered where every piece was. 😯

Well portrayed. I suspect he’d welcome his mum clearing up for him but resent it once he realised he couldn’t find anything anymore

I think he’s come to depend on his mum. Despite his bravado, he’ll probably find everything except independence and creativity. 😛
