Flash Fiction #165

Nostalgia

THROUGH A GLASS, DARKLY

Nostalgia ain’t what it used to be.

Perhaps the loss and blurring of memories from old age isn’t entirely a bad thing.  We can look back on our lives through the filter of contentment for a life well lived.

We can remember the happy birthdays, the important anniversaries, the great grandkids, and forget the nosy, incompetent co-workers, the uncaring, slave-driver bosses, the crazy neighbors, and the arrogant politicians.

They say that ignorance is bliss, and it can be – in a way.  Just remember that living well is the best revenge.  Accentuate the positive. Eliminate the negative.  Don’t worry.  Be happy!

When Alzheimer’s sets in, the victim gradually comes to a place of not knowing what has been lost. It is the caregivers who have to endure this long goodbye. Not sure why my mind went there, but it did. 🙂

This story was more about overfull mind distraction, but I understand the sad reality of your thought. I had to endure 7 years of it with my mother. She had several mini-strokes, and then a more serious one. At the end, she still recognized me, but had no idea where and why she was. 😦

Not to be one of those overly “cheery” peeps, I do tend to focus on the positive. It’s just so much easier and lighter that way 😉 Of course, as the memory goes, I like to think the happy ones are the toughest and ones that stick around!
    Excellent Ella addition!

I linked a music video to one of my posts, and a regular reader asked if I could do it more often, so I’m obliging. Glad you liked it. I chose Ella – cuz she’s the best – but everybody has done a cover, Aretha Franklin, Frank Sinatra….Lord, even Justin Timberlake. 😯

Emphasizing the positive gets my vote every time. Good writing.
