IT’S RAINING, IT’S POURING
Before I moved here from California, Piedmont was just the name of a city. Here in North Carolina it’s a little different. The word still means the same thing – foot of a mountain.
In California, the only thing that Piedmont had to worry about was if the San Andreas Fault opened up, and most of the state took a dip in the Pacific. Here, you guys have to evacuate to the piedmont to get away from big storms. When do you figure Hurricane Florence will die off?
Usually, if my drinks are watered down, it was done by the bartender.

These storms are some scary business for the folks in their way…

I went to Key West after a big storm some years ago. The stench of rotting dead palm leaves and washed-up seaweed was…. interesting.
Folks who regularly live in the affected areas soon learn to protect and rebuild their homes, the way we learn to di-ice our windshields and shovel three feet of snow. 😳
I’d love to know where that photo was taken, and the story behind the umbrellas. 🙂

This is a little resto-bar in the next town over from my home. Lovely, don’t you think? And someone had a great idea for decor that has benefits of protection from the sun during the day and just looks magical at night.

This brings to mind the fact that U.S. federal laws subsidize storm damage, effectively encouraging the rebuilding of houses and infrastructure that are just as vulnerable as before. This is no accident but rather a great example of how the affluent benefit themselves by influencing legislation.

No! Really??! Rich people actually do that? It’s a good thing that I don’t know any rich folks. 😉

Florence has been on my mind and ended up the topic for my contribution this week. I like the idea of drinking the storm away. Nicely done.

Florence had pretty well used herself up by the time she hit my little corner of PA, which isn’t terribly far from the Jersey shore, for a big hurricane. We mostly just got rain. And I’m housebound right now, so no need for an umbrella 🙂

We’re about 60 miles north of Erie. It takes a BIG blow to get this far – although a few, like Hurricane Hazel in ’64, did some real damage.
The grandson just moved out of Ottawa, in time to miss the tornado that went through. 😯
