A Collection Of Atheism-Related Quotes

atheist-i-am

“Through the prior assumption that his beliefs of faith are true, the Christian necessarily concludes that any ‘conflict’ between reason and faith is a mistake. He does not want contradictions, so he will refuse to accept anything as evidence of a contradiction. There is no apparent contradiction that cannot be explained away — even if it entails the castration of the Christian religion and the sacrifice of reason.”

George H. Smith, Atheism: The Case Against God

“Whenever a man imagines that he need only believe the truth of a proposition, without evidence … he becomes capable of anything.”

Sam Harris, The End of Faith

“Because religious doctrines are supposedly ordained of God, the religious adherent cannot easily question the teachings of his chosen church, even when those teachings are provably false. The scientist, on the other hand, is most rewarded when he proves the conventional wisdom wrong and revolutionizes our understanding of the universe.”

David Mills, Atheist Universe

“At this very moment, millions of sentient people are suffering unimaginable physical and mental afflictions, in circumstances where the compassion of God is nowhere to be seen, and the compassion of human beings is often hobbled by preposterous ideas about sin and salvation.”

Sam Harris, Letter To A Christian Nation

“Monotheists have to practise intellectual gymnastics to explain how an all-knowing, all-powerful and perfectly good God allows so much suffering in the world.”

Yuval Noah Harari, Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind

“Religious faith is, precisely because we are still-evolving creatures, ineradicable. It will never die out, or at least not until we get over our fear of death, and of the dark, and of the unknown, and of each other.”

Christopher Hitchens, God Is Not Great

“Being an atheist is nothing to be apologetic about. On the contrary, it is something to be proud of … ”

Richard Dawkins, The God Delusion

  4. Jim Wheeler says:

I submit that the statement about an atheist being willing to help another person is a little misleading. If it occurs in any given instance, the willingness to help is not because of any creed or ethos connected to atheism but because evolution made most people social creatures with empathy, most likely a survival trait.

You are absolutely right. Atheism has no unifying creed or ethos, and any help that an Atheist gives is on an individual basis. Mankind is a pack species, which evolutionarily survives best, if all (or most) help the others. The above graphic is intended as part of the constant push back needed against ‘Good Christians,’ who feel that God-given morals are needed. 😦

  7. God given morals of Christians?
Their god given moral told them it was perfectly ok to commit the worst act of mass genocide and extermination against my Native American ancestors under their Manifest Destiny theology.

It told them it was ok to commit acts of mass murder in their 9 forced conversion programs against the Pagans of Northern Europe.

It told them it was ok to slaughter whole towns of Jewish people, to blame them for the Black Death, etc.

It told them it was ok for them to build some of the most foul, evil and diabolocal torture machines to use on their fellow human beings they proclaimed as witches and heretics, and of course scientists who they disagreed with because the scientist proved them wrong.

It told them it was ok to own their fellow human beings as slaves.

It told them it was ok to go to war over differences in their belief in a god and a Jesus and slaughter whole nations and decimate their populations, like in the Thirty Year War between the Catholics and Protestants.

Yeah, Christian morality from their god and Jesus and leaders who order them to go out and slaughter people? Sure leaves a whole freaking lot to be desired. But of course? In their apologist hypocrisy? They will play the No True Scotsman line of apologetic bullshit to proclaim those people who did those things were not True Christians lmfao.

And of course? They say the same for the hundreds of thousands of Christian priests and pastors busted for raping kids, while they blame lgbts, atheists and Pagans for their rampant pedophilia.

I’m glad to have read this post this morning! A couple of weeks ago, I broke free from a life-time of indoctrinated Christianity and I’m, at last, beginning to think for myself. I’m looking forward to reading more posts in this section. 🙂

I publish one similar post each month, on the last Wednesday. I’d be glad to have you visit, read and comment.
Are you a Lesley-girl, or a Lesley-boy? I’ve known both. Lesley Towne (Bob) Hope being one of the males. From what little I’ve had a chance to read of your work, it seems on the female side, although, perhaps only because it shows social insight that males often lack. And likely British?? Would you care to declare place of residence, with any degree of precision? 😀

Hi, yes I’m the girl variety, lol. It’s in the spelling – ey = girl, ie = boy . . . at least, that’s how it is in the uk, but members of my own extended family still get the spelling wrong and address me as Leslie!
I live in the beautiful north-east of England, near Newcastle-upon-Tyne. 😀

I know about ‘Francis,’ and ‘Frances,’ but missed the “-lie” vs. “-ley.’ Before my then-fiancée visited my small hometown of Southampton, Ontario, she had never met a boy named Lynn. I insisted that the female version was Lynne. We also had a couple each of males named Shirley, and Beverly. 😳
