Bobby’s mother said, ”You want to be what?”
“Sesquipedalian and erudite.”
Well, the long word meant, ‘using long words’, and the short one meant, ‘learned or scholarly.’ “Why?”
“I want to impress people.”
She replied, “Your grandmother used to say, ‘Don’t get above your raisin.’ ” She almost smiled at his puzzlement. She hadn’t understood it when she was 16, either. “The word is actually raising. It means, ‘Don’t put on phony airs’. People will like you if you are honest and real. You have to study to get big words. You can’t just find them with a magnifying glass.

Go to Rochelle’s Addicted to Purple site and use her Wednesday photo as a prompt to write a complete 100 word story.
If nobody ever got above their raisin we wouldn’t get anywhere.

Yes…. but there’s a difference between honest self-improvement, and pretentious posturing. 🙂

I love the fact that the word for using long words is…. long. You don’t often find that kind of symmetry in life!

Especially on this site. It’s completely asymmetrical. Onomatopoeia is what the dog did when I didn’t let him out soon enough. 😉 😆

Ah the inspiration of youth, at least he has aspirations which is more than some his age these days.

More and more, in today’s world, kids need that. I had no particular aspirations. Worse, I had no life plan. I was lucky to have got as far as I did through intelligence and adaptability. 🙂

I never did trust those “learn a new word a day” calendars…

My grandson got one for Christmas. He can’t remember to tear off a sheet each day. He just ripped off an entire month, and handed it to me. I use it for the occasional Friday WOW, and as prompts for my A to Z Challenge posts. 🙂

Congratulations. Great post, especially for a first try.
My first one, I did just to prove that I could, and didn’t link to the group. It was 101 words. Every one since has been exactly 100 words. I look forward to seeing your future works. 😀

Sometimes I use big words I don’t fully understand in an effort to make myself sound more photosynthesis… hahaha (I know this is a joke but I’m also guilty😬)

Mother was right. Sesquipedalian is long word. Bobby is going to piss his friends off.

I love those old home-grown sayings. Keep a humble attitude, and people won’t mind your long words nearly so much 🙂
