Flash Fiction #215

He sat quietly, watching the birth of the coming dawn mirrored in the pool. Not that he didn’t like the company of people, it was just that the silent, solitary serenity of night caused the ideas to gel, and the prose to flow.

A writer needed to know about people, yet be apart from them to write their stories. He had heard that a common New Year’s resolution this year had been a cold turkey withdrawal from social media. A few would succeed, but, an addiction was an addiction. He wished them luck and lucidity, but right now, bed beckoned.

  1. Dear Archon,

So like a writer. I relate to wanting to be alone in the early morning hours. Well described. Obviously backing off of social media wasn’t included in our resolutions. Not that I bother with those. 😉

I don’t regard WordPress as a social media, more just a platform for writing. I also don’t try to fool myself or anyone else with resolutions. Like Popeye, “I yam what I yam.” I don’t have to go cold turkey, because I don’t use Facebitch, Tweeter, SnapCrap, or any of the others. I leave that for deep thinkers…. like Trump, or the Kardashians 😆

  2. James McEwan says:

Social media is now the modern thief of time. Great observation.

Solitude and quiet are a writer’s best friend. Social media their enemy. Well articulated in your story.

  4. Just read a novel about a writer (“Two Days Gone”) and it makes a point about the dichotomy of the writer — needing solitude to write, but needing immersion to know what to write about! Good job.

I’m all for social-think. A group of people can solve a problem faster/better than any but the most adept individual, because they bring a wider range of knowledge and opinions. That said, I still value what I achieve between 1 AM, and 5 AM. Thanx for the visit. 🙂

I really enjoyed this, Archon. You have gifted us with a small part of you 😉
The quiet hours, alone, are the best…
