THE LONG, SLOW CLIMB
When is a Starbucks not a Starbucks? When it’s right across the street from the city hall, but in a building that’s designated Historic, on which they can’t hang any exterior signs.
He’d studied welding in Community College, till he found out about clothing fires, toxic fumes, and blindness from ‘welders’ eye.’ Waiting for his barista betrothed, he was soon as adept as any employee, and was quickly hired, himself.
COVID slashed their hours and income in half, but it did give him free time to study online, as a Civil Engineer. Education is the best way up and out.

During the late 1800s, a local entrepreneur was influential in developing hydro-electric power at Niagara Falls, and having it
shippedwired here. Berlin, Ontario (now Kitchener) was the first electrically-lighted city in OntarioHe had a building erected on the main street to administer the distribution, and like Scrooge McDuck’s vault, to store the piles of money that he charged his customers.
Only recently has a larger building been necessary, and his original one been turned into a Starbucks. Its front door is a bit classier than the one in Rochelle’s picture. I’ve embarked on an ambitious, The Year In Pictures post, which will culminate next March 1. One of the photos will be of it. 🙂

My maternal grandparents came to Canada 140 years ago from Glasgow. If I ever win a lottery, I’d like to visit – the city, and the country. While the Grandson and Grand-daughter-in-law, who I based this tale on, currently both work at Starbucks, I have never drunk a cup of coffee in my life. Thanx for the visit and info. 🙂

I was thinking of collecting all my Flash Fictions, but many of them wouldn’t make sense without the photos, and I’d have to get individual authorizations from all the contributors.
