Flash Fiction #273

BETWEEN HEAVEN AND HELL

The joys of being middle management.
The big bosses shit on you – and Labor rubs it in.
On a clear day, you can see – this job stretching into infinity.

In 9 To 5, Dolly Parton thought she deserved a fat promotion.
My boss said, “Promotion??!  You’re lucky I pay you a salary.  If I’d wanted a Vice-President, I’d have hired a Vice-President – my son.  Now get back to expediting shipments”

Four years to retirement.
Three more years to retirement, then I’m going to take my well-earned pension and savings, and move to Aruba.

I’ll have a Caribbean rum punch, please.

Great retirement plan. Aruba is a lovely place if you like the over-developed tourist industry. I enjoyed my week there, lovely food and golf courses.

We’re due for wind chills of -13 tonight. Aruba sounds pretty damn good.

I could go for retiring somewhere warm. I feel as if I’ve worked for no pay and a few fringes for the last 25 years. I’ve had perfect attendance, too. I’ll gladly share a rum punch with you…

Retirement. Never looked back. Never said ‘I’m sorry.’

  5. I stayed put when I retired. It was strange that a familiar place suddenly felt so different! Mine’s a gin and tonic, please!

    Here’s mine!

In mid-2018 I retired and was starting to plan a big vaca, then covid happened and all plans have remained on hold. By the time you are ready to go, I hope it is smooth sailing for you.

  8. My best friend has another year and a half or so until retirement. I have moved south and can’t wait for her to do the same. I’m not retired but even if I had stayed with teaching I wouldn’t get a good pension anyhow, I taught private school mostly.

You’ve made me wonder – can/should/must teachers retire in the middle of a school year/semester?? 😕
I’ve always been a bit bewildered that the phrase, gone south or went south is a synonym for failure. Seems like a great idea to me. Then, I’m a Canadian. Detroit and Chicago are south of me. 😳

Retirement means doing what you always wanted to do but couldn’t because you had to earn money. Few people get the chance to earn their living from the pursuit they love.

Now that sounds like a life plan! I feel for middle management types, especially the really great ones out there. It can make all the difference, but I know it takes it toll. Great story.
