Flash Fiction #275

MORLOCK

Gather ‘round me, fellow agents of darkness.  We pay tribute to those who provide the needs of the sun-loving Eloi.

Many of the Early Birds are so proud of themselves, when they get a fast start on the day and show up at the Golden Arches at Six A.M. or the Mermaid Coffee Shop at Seven.  They don’t realize that those who waited on them, had to get up at three, or have been up all night, to get the grills hot, and the coffee urns bubbling.

They also serve, who work the night, for the benefit of the day-shift.

If you’d like to join the fun, go to Rochelle’s Addicted to Purple site and use her Wednesday photo as a prompt to write a complete 100 word story.

I used to wonder, who woke up the guy who blew reveille, to wake everybody else up?? Now it’s computerised and recorded, but I’ll bet the cooks are already busy in the kitchens. 😀

Indeed, Early Bird. You’re welcome from the Night Owl whom you mock.

I’m up early but am not ready for polite company. The older I get? The longer it takes me to get going.

I shall never see the coffee shop the same way again. Nice one. 🙂

  6. I just listened to The Time Machine audiobook a few weeks ago, and I forgot that it was such an amazing story. For many years here in Virginia, one of the neighbors had a rooster that woke us up each day of the week.

It’s a special breed that inhabits the night. I like the empathy in your story.

I’m not a third shifter–I just like to sleep–but this really knocks down the whole argument that getting up early is a virtue.

I feel for those workers. So many – hospital staff, transport workers. There’s a whole night-time population going about their business while I’m contentedly snoring away till 7 or 8. Ah, retirement has a lot going for it.

Night workers are amazing – I wonder if the Early Birders get a discount. In any event I hope they appreciate those who “also serve”.
