Flash Fiction #278

PHOTO PROMPT © Rochelle Wisoff-Fields

We’re getting a new city hall??!  This is the third in fifty years!  Another monument to bureaucracy??!  😯

Drug addicts and paraphernalia litter the streets.  Guys sleep in alleys and on vents.  The police force, social services, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, abused women’s homes and food-banks are underfunded and overwhelmed.  Still, council budgeted $24 million, most of it siphoned from the capital contingency account.

This will be a glorious legacy project to exalt outgoing, long-time mayor Priapus Swaggart.  He must really know where the bodies are buried.  The drunks will appreciate a new, warm lobby to sleep it off in.

How do you come up with people who sound like they were front-page news — Priapus Swaggart?

  2. Bill says:

Oh lawdy, you had to remind me. Urban wonderfulness. 🙂

  3. James McEwan says:

Well, perhaps he didn’t want to squander the money on drunks– they can squander their own.

  4. Jim Borden says:

Philadelphia’s City Hall always smells like urine…

I’ll take your word for it. I’ve never been there – Harrisburg is the closest. I’ve been through Pittsburgh, and drove into the tunnel across the river, to get to Indiana. 🙂

there’s a lot of this country I still need to visit, preferably by car…

With the wife’s inhalant allergies, everywhere we go, we must go by car. From Sault Ste. Marie to Ottawa, through Buffalo and Detroit, I’ve taken her to 13 states down the East side, to Savanna and Atlanta. I’ve been to Florida 3 times with my brother, all the way to Key West. 😀 If COVID finally breaks, we may try the DC area again. 😎

I loved our trip to Key West. I’ve hit every state on the East Coast except Maine. I still have a lot of the south and West left to visit…

        let’s hope COVID breaks soon!

The world is full of such as Mr Swaggart. How sad for us all. Well portrayed.
