’22 A To Z Challenge – Z

Our old mix-tapes had sides A and B.  It is only reasonable that their replacements should be CDs.

I used last year’s A To Z – Y post to babble about watching old black and white films on YouTube, an old and already, almost obsolete platform.  I thought I might close this year out by writing about an older system of watching even older moving pictures.  Ladies and gentlemen, Thomas Alva Edison Presents his fabulous

ZOETROPE

zoh-ee-trohp ]
a device for giving an illusion of motion, consisting of a slitted drum that, when whirled, shows a succession of images placed opposite the slits within the drum as one moving image.

ORIGIN OF ZOETROPE

1865–70; irregular <Greek zōḗ life + tropḗ turn

Western society has come so far, so fast, perhaps nowhere quite much as in Entertainment.  For centuries – millennia – a flickering candle was the zenith of amusement and attention-holding.  Technology has changed entertainment, particularly the visual arts – films, television, and videos.

A century ago, Lon Chaney – Senior – the great makeup genius and actor, played a Jekyll and Hyde type role in a film.  He walked around a ‘tree’ as Jekyll, altered nothing but the way he held his body and face, and came around the other side as the evil Hyde character.  Some women watching the movie actually fainted.  Play today’s Alien, or Predator, or even The Matrix, and we’d have the entire audience aswoon.

My attempts at entertainment are definitely spinning, and often best viewed through a narrow slit.  I’ve got to get out of this heavy white jacket.  I’ve got the month of April to put into motion.  😉

  1. Well, that’s a zinger for ya! Makes me long for my zither. By the by, did you realise there are not one, but TWO different types of critter whose name begins with ZYZZ? One’s a weevil and one’s a marine tubular worm. Crazy stuff, no?

And please, PLEASE get April going! it’s been below 20 degrees (Fahrenheit, none of that Commie Celsius stuff!) for two nights in a row! That’s January temps, not mid-March. I feel like a stoker on a steamship – I’ve spent the last two nights running down to the furnace, shoveling in wood as fast as I can! I should be making 20 knots, easy, by now! 😉

We just got (What I hope is) the last half inch of snow for the winter.
Where do you steal, buy get your firewood?? Does the neighborhood have fewer trees each morning, or are sheds, barns, and pickup rails disappearing at an astonishing pace??! 😕 👿

      • Oh, my goodness, no! I am a law-abiding citizen … at least on record. We buy either “leftovers” from sawmills or Amish cutting trees for said sawmills, or we (occasionally) get “leftovers” from the Amish furniture shops. That stuff is expensive, though – the wild wood is much cheaper, and we have enough friends in the Amish community that we get special “for us only” discounts. The one advantage to our only working car being a cargo version of a Dodge minivan. (About the ONLY advantage for that …. pile of rust and malfunctioning parts. 🙄 )

Being long in the tooth now, I often marvel how much has changed in only my lifetime. When I was a kid, radios were the high-tech in the town home and electricity was still absent from many farms, being less than two generations old. From a geological perspective, change is proceeding at an exponential pace.

The slope of the bell curve is steep. It’s a struggle to keep up. Many of ‘The People’ are not ready for it. A recent poll showed that 40% of American adults still believe that the sun revolves around the Earth. 🙄
