Teenage Wasteland
Halfway down the hill was a small clearing, set like a saucer. The local parents knew of it because most of them had been there in their teens, to puff a prohibited cigarette, or for a bit of necking and furtive fumbling.
Nowadays, parents and police alike, wondered what the town’s teens were doing up there, but the trees still grew thick.
Last week, a torrential downpour had spilled water over the edge, causing a minor flood and scouring out the dell.
Now the evidence lay in plain sight at the base. Not exactly Sodom and Gomorra. What to do??!

I was born and raised in a tourist town on Lake Huron. During my teens I discovered several of these hidden party-places. In the late ’50s/early ’60s, the recovered artifacts were fairly benign – cold campfire coals, cigarette butts, a few beer bottles. Back then, kids weren’t ‘doing drugs”, or drinking whiskey, or even worse, wine! That was for ‘drunken Indians!’
I took my girlfriend to a quiet retreat in the bush, and she discovered a bra, hanging from a branch, that wasn’t there when I first found the place, and decided that we weren’t staying. There were no used condoms, because young unmarried people weren’t allowed to buy them. They were difficult enough for married adults to obtain.
And so, a paean to ‘the good old days’ as opposed to the enlightened present. 😯

Dear Archon,
You left me wondering what happened here and wanting to know more.

Very good … but with a title like that, it could end with a song like this … https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YN-MUx6dg6w … of course I prefer this version because of its uniqueness …
PS: Thanks for the pics … will respond via email … and hey … my holiday party is this weekend … it starts at 3 AM … so I imagine you’ll be up and around.

The title seemed appropriate with the theme. Much as I’m a Who fan, that version is just mind-blowing. Those guys are great visual showmen.
I’ll be up, posting some Christmas comedy, so I’ll be sure to drop in early…uh, late?…you know! 😉

Glad to know that I introduced you to Blue Man Group. I’m lucky because I’ve seen them twice .. .their small venue act (preferred) and their large venue act (still wonderful). Here’s more for you. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=np4Ug8nThaE

Thanx for the second helping. I’ve actually been aware of them for years – even seen a few appearances with Jay Leno or others, never live though. 😀

I wonder what was really going on there? Kids will always find some “secret” place to indulge in pastimes parents would frown upon!

What’s the quote?? Good judgement comes from experience – and experience comes from bad judgement. Most of them/us survive to grow stronger and wiser, despite parents’ frowns. 🙂

I love the language you use, can’t even explain why but it just flows with me.

I tend to use vocabulary and construction that’s even older than already-old me. I also slip in, sometimes unconsciously, a fair bit of alliteration. It creates a sonorous, ‘Proper’, late-19th-century effect. I’m glad it resonates with you. 😀

Archon, I’m just glad my kids aren’t that age any more. I don’t want to know what was going on in that spot. My son went to a party once where the kids parents were away and they got into the alcohol. My son ran all the way home scared and slammed the door behind him. Well written. — Susan

You have a wise son. I managed to get my two kids past this stage without serious damage, and the daughter has raised a wise son. Any great-grandchildren will be someone else’s worry. 🙂
